MySQL MCP Server Generator for AI Agents
Give Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and your own agents safe access to a MySQL database through named tools instead of a raw connection. APIGenerator reads your schema and generates an MCP server with row rules, keys and a log of every call.

Why a connection string is the wrong way to connect agents
Most open source MySQL MCP servers take a host, a user and a password, then let the model write SQL. That works in a demo. In production it means one leaked prompt can read every table, a bad generated query can scan a table with 80 million rows, and nobody can say afterwards which agent touched what. A generated server with defined tools removes all three problems.
What the generated MySQL MCP server does
- Reads tables, columns, types, indexes, primary and foreign keys from your CREATE TABLE statements.
- Generates a tool per table and per relation, with filters, sorting and a hard cap on page size.
- Separates read tools from write tools. Write tools exist only for the tables you switch on.
- Applies row rules per key, so an agent for one customer or region sees only that slice.
- Uses parameterised queries. The model supplies values, never SQL text.
- Writes a log line for every call with the key, the tool, the arguments and the row count.
From CREATE TABLE to a working agent in four steps
-
Paste or upload your MySQL schema, or describe the tables in plain words.
-
Review the proposed tools and change names, descriptions and permissions.
-
Choose output. MCP server is preselected, and the same schema also gives you a REST API and GraphQL.
-
Deploy to managed hosting or export the code, then add the server URL and a key to your agent.
Teams that put agents in front of real MySQL data
- SaaS teams that want a support or analytics agent to answer questions from production data without a read replica full of everything.
- Agencies that build agents for several clients and need one key and one set of row rules per client.
- Data teams that already run MySQL or MariaDB and want agents to use the same tables as the BI tools.
- Platform teams that must show an auditor exactly what an AI agent read last quarter.
CREATE TABLE orders (
id uuid PRIMARY KEY,
customer_id uuid REFERENCES customers,
status text NOT NULL,
total numeric(10,2),
placed_at timestamptz
);
Raw connection MCP server or a generated one
A raw server is fine for a local experiment on your laptop. The table describes what changes when the agent reaches customer data.
| Topic | Open source MySQL MCP server | Generated with APIGenerator |
|---|---|---|
| Access model | One credential, any query | Named tools, one key per agent |
| SQL written by | The model | Parameterised queries from the schema |
| Row level limits | None | Per key rules |
| Write protection | Depends on the DB user | Write tools off until enabled |
| Audit trail | Your own logging | Built in per call |
| Docs and REST API | Not included | Generated from the same schema |
Other databases and outputs
Running PostgreSQL as well? See the postgres mcp server. To put many agents behind one governed endpoint use the mcp gateway. For the same tables as a normal API, see api database and create rest api.
Questions about mysql mcp server
No. Agents call named tools with a key. The generated server holds the connection on your side and runs parameterised queries, so the model never writes SQL and never sees credentials.
Yes. APIGenerator reads the schema from your DDL, so any engine that speaks MySQL syntax works, including MariaDB, Amazon Aurora MySQL and PlanetScale style schemas.
Yes. A row rule attaches a filter such as tenant_id to the key, and every tool call by that agent is restricted to those rows, for reads and writes alike.
You choose. Export the code and run it next to your MySQL instance, or deploy to managed hosting. Only the schema is needed to generate it.
