How API generator works, from source to hosted API

APIGenerator starts from what you already have and ends with an API that apps and AI agents call in production. Here is what happens at each step and what you control along the way.

Step 1. Bring a source you already have

You do not need to write a specification first. APIGenerator accepts the formats teams actually keep around.

  • A plain English description, for example a booking system with patients, doctors and appointments.
  • SQL DDL from PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQLite, or a Prisma schema.
  • A CSV or XLSX sheet, where the header row becomes fields and the first rows set the types.
  • An OpenAPI 3.x file in JSON or YAML.
  • A GraphQL SDL.

Each format has its own page with details: api database, excel to api and the OpenAPI generator.

Step 2. Review the API design

APIGenerator reads the source and proposes a design you can inspect before anything is deployed.

  • Resources and fields with types, required flags and validation rules.
  • Relations such as has many and belongs to, with nested routes where they help.
  • Custom actions from verbs in your description, such as book, cancel or approve.
  • Filtering, sorting and pagination on every list endpoint.

You rename, remove or add resources and fields by hand. Manual edits do not use an AI generation.

Step 3. Deploy to hosting or export the code

Choose where the API runs. You can do both, for example host staging and export production.

  • Managed hosting with HTTPS, separate dev, staging and production environments, logs and usage analytics. See backend hosting.
  • Code export in Node.js TypeScript, Python FastAPI or PHP Laravel, with a Dockerfile and a CI test suite.
  • Versioning, so a breaking change ships as a new version while existing clients keep working.

Step 4. Connect apps and AI agents

Every API comes with what consumers need on day one.

  • API keys, JWT or OAuth2 client credentials, with a rate limit per key.
  • Interactive docs with request examples in curl, JavaScript and Python.
  • An MCP server whose tools mirror your endpoints, so agents in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor connect with one URL and a key. Read more about the custom MCP server.
  • Contract tests and a mock server, so frontend work starts before the backend is final.

One schema, every output in sync

When you change a field, APIGenerator updates the endpoints, the OpenAPI or GraphQL schema, the docs, the request examples, the tests and the MCP tools together. Docs drift and forgotten agent tools stop being a recurring task.

See it on your own input

The demo on the homepage parses your description or file in your browser and shows the endpoints, a schema excerpt and the MCP tools it would generate. Your files are never uploaded.
